I'm trying to get xp installed through bootcamp but I only have an upgrade cd. Can someone help me out here and let me know if this is possible or not? If it is, please describe how, if not, then tell me. I'd appreciate it. By the way, what is this new thing will Parellels that has to do with bootcamp? Is what I want to do possible through parallels now?

If you already have XP installed in a Boot Camp partition, the new Parallels feature allows a XP virtual machine (VM) be created by pointing to the Boot Camp partition. All the windows files and applications are shared between the Boot Camp XP and VM. You don't need to reinstall XP and You don't need any Windows CD for that.

But if you do not have XP installed in Boot Camp, you will have to do that first and it requires a XP install CD, not an upgrade CD.
 
Hey I appreciate the reply sidssp. Do you have any idea if in the new Leopard OS you can accomplish a bootcamp install without the full version cd?

But I do own it. I don't know what gave you the idea that I wanted to break the law. It just so happens that the only thing stopping me is that I can't get the cd to come out of the stupid slot disc on the iMac during the install. The install process asks me to prove that I'm able to upgrade which I can't do because in bootcamp you cannot get the darn disc out to put in the other cd proving it.

All I need to do is just get the disc out during the install. Bootcamp doesn't include the opportunity for this. I already own the software and am given the chance during the install to insert a cd proving that I am legal, but with bootcamp, you can't get the installation disc out in order to put the other in. Thank you for that link, I'll check it out.
 
I suggest you go to the bootcamp forums at apple.com and ask for help ejecting your disk. It may be an easy fix.

Oh wait, if I recall correctly, bootcamp only works with SP2. You cannot upgrade from SP1 to SP2 in bootcamp.

This is not a limitation in parallels. If you can install SP1 in Parallels, you can upgrade to SP2.

Yea I realize that you need sp2. I have that all taken care of, it is just that option to take out the disc in bootcamp that is stopping me.

Oh and I've had posts over at the bootcamp forum for days without anyone even giving them a look see. I'm wasting my time over there. I just thought that since I heard of some new features in parallels pertaining to bootcamp, I'd come over here and ask some questions.

using upgrade disc

You can connect an external USB cd/dvd-drive (make sure it is the only USB drive connected to the Mac) with a full version of any previous full-version of Windows (I used an old OEM windows 98) operating system. (I bet you can also use an external hard drive that has the folders from the windows 98 disc copied to the hard drive, if you do not have an external cd-drive)

Now after bootcamp asks to reboot, make sure you have the windows xp upgrade disc in the mac drive and the full version of the old windows on the external USB drive.

The windows install setup will detect the external USB drive and accept the old windows as proof and allow you to clean install the windows XP. I had no problem installing using an windows professional sp2 upgrade disc.

Thanks for the idea of using an external cd drive. That never crossed my mind. :) Oh and the hard drive idea won't work, as the installer won't let you do anything but put a disc into a drive to prove yourself legal. Thanks for the reply.

I remember reading somewhere that if you hold down the F12 key (5, 10, 20, 30 seconds?) your Mac will eventually get the signal to eject the disk. This hint was originally intended for those using non-Apple keyboards connected to a MacMini, but the same might hold true in a Boot Camp environment since Apples EFI firmware would be collecting the keyboard input in the first place before passing it on to XP.

That is a different problem. I have read somewhere that you can make a complete XP SP2 install CD by integrating SP2 into a non-SP2 install CD. It is called slipstreaming. Please check out this link for more info: http://www.dualbootguru.com/bc - slipstreaming.shtml

Slipstreaming is a complicated process, try external drive first, use it as a last resolve.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. Seening as how I have an apple keyboard, I even tried the actual eject button, but it didn't work either. Might you have anymore suggestions? They are all welcome.

Thanks for this link, but I had already put the boot disk together using this method, and although it is a great procedure and it got me over the sp2 hump, it did nothing for the eject issue I now face.

Instructions for ejecting a CD from a Mac:

1. From within OS X, drag the icon to the trash.
2. From within OS X & with an Apple keyboard, press & hold the "eject" key for at least 2 seconds.
3. Power down the Mac, then power up while holding down the F12 or "eject" key during start-up. Don't let up on the F12 key untill the CD is completely ejected.
4. From within Windows, right-click on the drive and select "eject".
5. Disassemble your Mac so that you can manualy press the "Eject" button in the drive at the appropriate time.

Information on how to install XP SP1 via Boot Camp range from:

1. It cannot be done; you must use/purchase a full install version of XP SP2 not an upgrade version.

2. Make a new bootable install CD by slipstreaming the SP2 stuff into the XP SP1 disk. For example http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp

3.0 Make a new bootable install CD/DVD that also includes valid Windows 98 or ME install files:
3.1 Copy all of the files from the XP Upgrade disc to a folder e.g. C:\XPCD
3.2 If necessary follow the directions to slipstream SP2 to C:\XPCD\I386
3.3 Copy the \WIN9X and \DRIVERS folders from your Win98 or ME CD to C:\XPCD
3.4 Copy all of the contents of the Macintosh Drivers disc to the a new folder under C:\XPCD (e.g. C:\XPCD\Mac)
3.5 Follow the directions in the slipstreaming guide to burn bootable XP media along with the additional folders we added you may have to use a DVD blank to be sure to have all the files you need.

jbh001 I sure appreciate all the work you went to, but evidently you have misunderstood what my problem is. I know how to get a cd out of the drive under normal circumstances or if it don't want to come out with the eject button. The problem I have is during the installation of windows via bootcamp when it asks you to prove that you have another copy of windows by putting in the disc, well here is where the problem lies. I have the other disc (a previous version of windows), but in bootcamp there is no "eject disc" routine written into the software. Hopefully this clears things up in that regard.

I've already used slipstream to put together the new boot disc with sp2 on it and it works great, however it does not take care of the eject problem.

I finally getting some help over at the bootcamp forum. There is this one forum user over there who just may have the workaround for me. He has found a program called wineject, which can be found at www.wineject.com, and he is supposed to give me the "How To's" info later on in email. But you just install it on a little usb stick drive and have it plugged into the mac during the installation process of windows, and it is supposed to allow you do eject any disc on any type of drive at whenever time that you want to using various methods like clicking on an icon, or maybe setting it up to do it with keystrokes.

Oh and I DID search high/low for anything/everything I could find regarding the resolution of this problem but couldn't find anything that would work. Hence I started hitting the forums.

Just an update on this

Just thought I'd come back over here and update this problem. I found NOTHING that worked for me in regards to getting around that eject problem. I ended up just taking the plunge and buying a full version. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions/replies. I appreciate it.
