auto-shutdown for Win XP

it sure would be great if one could quit Parallels and have it (optionally, like autostart) automatically shut down (power off) the Windows XP guest OS.

Since it's so*easy (start Parallels) and quick (5-6 secs on my MBP 2G machine) to start up, it should be just as easy to shut it down, to make the experience complete.
 
Nice idea, but for a fast clean shutdown of Windows, you'll have to talk to Microsoft. Just powering down the VM is the equivalent of pulling the plug on the actual hardware. A clean shutdown of XP will take just as long in a VM as it does on a real machine of the same speed, which can be so long it feels like hours, but is more like a minute or two. You can always suspend the VM which takes ten seconds or so.

A clean shutdown of OSX isn't instantaneous either.

Of course I understand you can't just power down the VM, and, yes, XP takes time to shut down (though maybe a few seconds in my case).

What I'm after is the same thing one gets when quitting any program: you can quit it and then select another program and forget about it, knowing it'll do the "right thing", even if it takes a while. (I.e., Parallels would start the XP power-down process and wait till it shut down, then exit).
 
Not good enough. If I tell OS X to shutdown or restart, I can sit here and wait for 2 minutes while Parallels hibernates XP. Sometimes Parallels is in the background and I forget its running when I shut down or restart. It takes my XP install about 6 seconds to shut down and about 10 seconds to boot. A LOT faster than save/restore of the VM.

But that has got nothing to do with ChrisRyland's question. He/she does not want to quit OSX, he/she wants OSX to keep running and be able to use it, even if the VM is still in the process of shuting down.

ChrisRyland, correct me if I'm wrong.

That's right--my goal is to simply request a shutdown of Win XP in the background, after which Parallels will quit, but as soon as I quit Parallels, I want to switch to something else and forget about it, as with any application that might take a while to quit.

In Parallels configuration there is a tab titled "VM Flags". In there you should check the "Exit application on VM shutdown". Then when you shutdown windwoes, Parallels will also exit after the shutdown has finished.

Remember, after you click on "turn off" in windohs, you can "ctrl+alt" to get back to OSX with bill's thing and then Parallels exiting while you go on working.

Excellent--thanks for the alternate approach. That should solve it.

(Though I'm still running the old official build 1848, which doesn't have that option. Will look forward to the next official version.)
 
Hmm, just updated to the RC (build 1898) and still don't see the VM flag "Exit application on VM shutdown". Is that in a later version? If so, which version?

Well actually, it's in the Linux version, and I just assumed it was in the Mac version as well.

If not, then maybe you have something to post in the "wish list" forum.

I understand - but my wish is the same as his - that I can quit Parallels and have it shutdown Windows at the same time. My desire is for a different reason - but the wish is the same.
