Backing up VM and other newbie questions

Hi, this is my first post. I searched and could not find a related topic. Please excuse me if I was mistaken.

I installed Parallels smoothly but agonised with the tedious XP installation and updating. I now have a fully installed XP VM running and would like to make a backup of this state in case I need to return to it without the pain of a complete re-install.

My question is this: Is backing up the VM XP simply making another copy of the Windows XP directory from the Parallels document directory?

Another side question: Is an anti-virus software needed or recommended when running XP in Parallels?

yes, same protection is needed just like windows was running in a normal PC. the nice thing about parallels is that build 3188 comes with the Kaspersky Protection Suite. You can back up your Parallels folder as part of a normal day to day backup of the Mac. You can also clone your VM so you can have a known good image should the main VM get infected somehow.
 
Where is this protection suite located? I believe that it has to be installed from the 'Actions" menu. Why is my option to install 'grayed' out? Must it be installed prior to laying down an OS?
