Best Practice Upgrade - RC(1) to RC(2)

Hi All,

I installed Parallels Desktop v.PW2.1(RC) last Monday, and WinXP SP1 onto a MacBook 1.8Ghz / 60GB / 1.2MB, and it's working well.

Whats is the best method to upgrade to RC2?

I've installed RC1 on a MBP and would like to know this as well. Do I uninstall RC1 then upgrade to RC2? Can I install RC2 without uninstalling RC1? Something other?

Well not sure if this the best way to do it but here is what I did and it works for me pretty good.

1. Uninstalled the Tools in Windows XP
2. Uninstall RC1 (using the uninstall script in RC1)
3. Reboot Mac Book Pro
4. Install RC2
5. Reboot MBP
6. Start Windows XP and install Tools
7. Reboot MBP

I know this is over kill but this way I know that everything is fresh and there are no lock held on any files while upgrade.

So far so good

I believe that you just install RC2 on top of RC1, and there is no need to delete anything.

1. Quit RC1 if it's running.
2. Install RC2.
3. start Windows and install Tools
4. reboot Windows.

That's all.

Can't reinstall Parallel Tools

Well, I am one of the unlucky few(?) that can't reinstall Parallels Tools once back in RC2. I'd rather not blow away the VM and start all over, though...

Well I just went-for-it, double clicked the RC2 installer package and hoped for the best. Happy to say that it worked out well.

Ben H - try un-installing the tools, and then installing them again.

cwest: Way ahead of you... No dice...

The menu item in Parallels tools just toggles between "Install Parallels tools" until I hit "Cancel Parallels tools" an hour later... Thanks, though.

Nope.

Step 2.5: Reboot OSX
This is critical. The app and kernel extensions work together, and a Mac reboot is required to install the new kexts.

I'm in the same position. Does anyone know a way out of this ?!?

Just FYI, the uninstaller froze the first time I tried to uninstall Parallels Tools RC1. So I force quit the uninstaller, rebooted the VM, and tried uninstalling again. Second time's the charm.

Please note that the installer package recognizes a previously installed version. Simply install the new version over the old one. There appears to be no need to uninstall first. The sequence of installation windows will lead you to the 'UPGRADE' button instead of an 'INSTALL' button.

I have posted the general question about a difinitive upgrade procedure here before and got conflicting replies. It is time for the Parallels team to weigh in on this topic.

It remains unclear if the 'Parallels Tools' needs to also be reinstalled (upgraded) but I recomend doing so in order to reap any profits from improvements to the 'Tools'.

Hi Don,

The problem is (for some people at least) that after upgrading from RC1 to RC2, re-installing "Parallel Tools" doesn't complete.

Doing "VM -> Install Parallel Tools..." never completes. An hour later, "VM -> Cancel Parallels Tools installation" is still displayed.

I've tried re-starting the VM and rebooting the Mac. Same behaviour. So now I have no idea what state my Parallel Tools installation is in.

I don't really want to do a full re-install...
