Cannot change preferences on VM

I've set my Guest OS (winXP) to launch automatically when I start Parallels. I've also set Parellels to shut down on shutdown of my Guest OS. How foolish of me.

Now there's no point in time where I can change the preferences and settings on the virtual machine. I can change preferences on Parallels as a whole when the VM is running, but I can't change the prefs on the VM itself.

There must be a way to change my setup so that the Guest OS doesn't launch automatically when I start Parallels or, alternatively, that Parallels doesn't shut down when I shut the Guest OS down.
