Can't Connect To Internet

I checked the forum first, and tried to follow the same procedure that worked for someone else. I was not so fortunate. I followed the instructions below (from Anupama). I was not given an option to uninstall application settings, and could not figure out how to do so. I was never prompted to create a new virtual machine, and couldn't find a .pvm file. (Documents / Parallels was empty.) When I went to Parallels Tools the wizard informed me that it was outdated and fixed it for me.

Parallels now shows as build 5638, but still no internet. Internet is still fine on the Mac side- OS 10.5.7.

Please follow the steps below in regards to the issue:

1. Please uninstall Parallels using the latest 5638 build.

But remember that you need to uninstall both application and application settings while uninstalling Parallels Desktop application.


2. Then install Parallels desktop build 5638. After installing you will be prompted to create a new virtual machine. Cancel that page and go to File -> Open and choose the appropriate .pvm file in Documents/Parallels. Start the virtual machine.

3. Now, uninstall Parallels Tools from add or remove programs(start menu/control panel), after uninstalling, restart Windows.

4. Install Parallels Tools from virtual machine tab on top menu bar.

Hello John,

Please uninstall and reinstall Parallels Tools,

a) On windows side click on start - > control panel - > add/remove programs - > from here remove the Parallels
tools completely. Shut down Windows properly,restart the Mac.

b) After restarting Launch Parallels Desktop - > configure - > install Parallels Tools. Now Parallels Tools will be
automatically installed.

After installing Parallels Tools - :

1. Go to System Preferences - > Sharing - > Internet and turn off Apple Internet sharing.

2. Please set Parallels Network Adapter to Shared networking.

3. In Windows please open Network Connections -> right-click LAN icon -> find Local Area Connection
properties -> select Internet Protocol TCP/IP properties -> open General Tab and select Obtain IP and DNS server
addresses automatically check boxes.

Now please have check whether you are connecting to internet from windows side or not.

Thank you for your additional instructions. As it turns out, I don't need them yet. I guess my computer just needed a good night's sleep. It's working fine this AM. I will keep your instructions in a safe place however, in case I lose connectivity again.

I'm having the same problem and tried re-installing first. That worked for a bit but the problem came back. Then I tried just re-installing Parallels tools like in the instructions above but that didn't work at all.

Are there any other fixes for this persistent issue?

I finally had a chance to try out those instructions, when I lost my Parallels internet connection again an hour ago. Once again, the instructions are not translating.

I un-installed Parallels tools, then hit a brick wall. I found "Install Parallels Tools" under "Actions". (There is no "Configure" menu.) Instructions said the guest OS had to be running and I had to be logged in to install. I logged in to Windows XP, and my pointer is trapped in the XP window. I CANNOT ACCESS THE PARALLELS MENUS! I suppose somebody thinks this is an amusing Catch-22, but not me!

I just happened to notice the option to release the keyboard and mouse, but will leave the above paragraph anyway- as a reminder to tech guys. You're not dealing with experts. Please make the instructions a little more comprehensive. Back to my first problem.

I, like John DiMartino, followed the un-install / re-install instructions below, and had the same result- STILL NO INTERNET. So, I will re-iterate his question. What am I supposed to do now?

Will upgrading fix this problem?
 
I switched the connection type to bridged from shared in the "Configure" menu. The option is under "Hardware"->"Network Adapter" on the left hand side-bar.

To get to the Configure menu launch parallels desktop, make sure the VM you want to edit is open (not running) and click on the "configure" icon at the top.

It's a work-around not a fix but it'll do for now.
 
John, I appreciate your help, but...

... unfortunately your work-around doesn't seem to work for me.

I changed to "bridged", tried "default", "Ethernet", and "Airport". Every time I get "A network cable is unplugged".

I figured maybe Parallels was confused by the MacBook Pro being connected to Ethernet and Airport, so I turned Airport off and re-started the Mac & Parallels. No change.

Parallels guys- when are you gonna fix the tools, instead of just telling people to re-install?
 
More info.

I just checked the LAN connection. It shows no problem- connected, and sending and receiving packets, but still no internet on Parallels desktop.
 
Work Offline ?!?!?!?

After a couple more un-install / re-installs, misc. fussing around, and lots of praying, I happened to notice that the "Can't Connect To Internet" Explorer page suggested to make sure "Work Offline" isn't checked. I've never checked "Work Offline", never had the slightest need, so why bother? On the other hand, after blowing a good solid day-and-a-half over the last week or so trouble shooting this damn thing, what's another 10 seconds.

"Work Offline" was checked. I unchecked it, and the internet works fine.

I don't know if this is an "Explorer" glitch, or if one the "Parallels Tools" likes to check "Work Offline" on a whim. You "Parallels" guys might want to look into it, and all you other folks experiencing this frustrating issue might want to check your Explorer settings.

For anyone else reading this thread in future... #3 above fixed my connection issues.

I have Vista:

1. Open "Network and Sharing Center".
2. In sidebar, click on "Manage network connections".
3. CTRL-click on "Local Area Connection"
4. Double click on "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6); make sure "Obtain an IPv6 address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are selected. Click "OK".
5. Double click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4); make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are selected. Click "OK".
6. Click "OK".

For me, #5 above, at some point in time, I had manually input DNS server addresses... It took me a whole day to finally get this resolved! UGH!

I'm sorry, but I really do hate Windows.
