can't get an Ubuntu 7.10-based distro running

ok - I can't figure out how to get this distro running:

for the record, it can be virtualized, I got it running on VMWare on the first shot.

I've tried to select Linux/Ubuntu and also tried to follow this advice:

and tried a 2nd machine Linux/Other Linux Kernel 2.6

after it reboots after installing all the files, the screen just keeps resizing and the X desktop never shows.

I'd like to give Parallels the benefit of the doubt - any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

just noticed I can hit "ESC" on bootup and select "Recovery Mode"

it all goes well and makes it to the prompt.

when I type "exit" - it does the resolution bouncing thing while it is stuck on:

"* Running Local Boot Scripts (/etc/rc.local) [OK]"

eventually it goes to a ASCII screen (see attachment)

if I send Ctrl-Alt-Del, it says "Stopping GNOME Display Manager..." and eventually reboots

something special I need to do to configure the display to support Parallels?

only have 4 days left in my eval so appreciate it if we can iron this out before then.

ok - that was great to get my desktop to show up. For the record, the specific steps I followed were to go into "recovery mode" and edit the xorg.conf file.

Now I'm stuck in 800x600 using the "Plug n Play" video driver.

Is there a Parallels video driver I can install?

I looked on the VMWare side and notice there is a "vmware - VMWare virtual video video cards" driver that allows it go to go full screen on my BenQ FP71G+S

You should install Parallels Tools for Parallels video driver obtaining.

that worked awesome! my bad for not seeing that option - i actually tried to look through all the menus for something like this.

thank you very much for troubleshooting this issue.

this thread was very helpful in learning how to do it from Terminal - I couldn't start the shell script from X-Windows for some reason:

for the record and for reference to others who run into the same issue - would installing Parallels Tools avoid me having to edit the xorg.conf file directly?

If not, will you be making this enhancement in your next release?

The default install on VMWare Fusion appears to shuts down despite the "libhal shutdown failed" being displayed on the screen - control is returned to VMWare Fusion and the user.
