can't install xp

Bit poster
at the workstation window I click the on button and get the console view.
i put the xp disk in the cd drive. if anything is happening i can't tell.
no cursor appears. no touchpad. no keyboard.


but i get "No boot device available, press Enter to continue"
In configuration i specify boot device as hard disk and get message,
s[pecify cd rom as boot device
same message

i got it working

but am not certtain how. i made a new VM and kept doing the same thing over and over

so i suggest that the installation material be made clearer.
