Can't run Windows anymore?

Why does it seem like Windows just won't work on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009)? I installed Vista successfully in Parallels 5, but it just didn't run well at all. when I tried installing XP via BootCamp, Snow Leopard crashed. why is this such a hard task? it never seemed too difficult on my iBook G4 (using Virtual PC 5 and RealPC 2) thanks!
