can't update software

I have an Imac intel core duo with 1 GB ram. I was able to install Parallels 1848 and it worked fine. I upgraded to 1884 and it crashed when I turn on the VM. I noticed the version was not updating. I downloaded the 1896.2 version and now I get this error message:

Error occurred while trying to interact with Parallels driver! Parallels Desktop is either not installed or/and configured or has integrity problems, which prevent it from operating properly. Please reinstall the Parallels Desktop.

I tried to reinstall and same error occurs. Again the version of the desktop remains at 1884. So, what's going on? I don't see others listing this problem. Am I doing something wrong??
Thanks to anyone who can help!!
P.S I didn't uninstall original desktop as I did not want to lose my guest os installation.

Probably best you uninstall the original desktop.

Before you question me, the guest OS resides in a different area from the program. So when you install again, with the .2 version, Parallels will recognise the guest OS and start using it. Pretty tricky.

Thanks for the help. I uninstalled the software and i was able to install the updated version. Problem is that when I hit the Vm on button, I am getting the message "no boot device" in the guest os start up. Any idea where to from here? I really appreciate the guidance!
