changing monitors on remote connection

Hi. So in my office, I have most of my open apps on external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro. When I connect to it via Access, it connects to the MacBook Pro monitor and I can't find a way to switch monitors without going into Sys Prefs and telling remote machine to mirror monitors. Thus, as an example, if my Windows virtual machine is running as a window on external monitor, when I click on it within Access it doesn't show on iPad or iPhone. Rather it just shows the notebook monitor. Is there a way in Access to switch to view the external monitor? Yes, I can unplug the external when I leave the office and have everything on the MacBook Pro monitor, but that seems crazy to always have to do...
