Coherence mode does not work

I have the latest version (3188) installed on my MacBook Pro. When I press the coherence-button or select coherence-mode from the menu, nothing happens. Also, when selecting full-screen mode I see a black frame around the OS-window rather than the full screen is used.

What can I do to correct this? Thanks for any hints & tips.
