Coherence Troubles

I recently installed parallels 10, with windows 8.1 onto my Mac. Everything seems up to date and working. Except if I enter coherence mode the "desktop" version of windows 8.1 does not actually work. If I use the "new" block type, it works fine just like launch pad. But when I try and switch to "desktop" it will not do the coherence properly and just basically doesn't show that there is any interactions going on. Anyone??

I start up parallels desktop. I currently have coherence off. Thus a new window containing the windows 8.1 operating system opens. If I click view, enter coherence the loading animation appears. Then the start menu appears. The side of windows 8.1 that is set up as the Xbox dashboard and the OS is set up as the boxes you can move and select. It functions the way it should. If I click on any of the apps it opens and works the way it's supposed to. And also if I click off of any of the apps it takes me back to my OS X home screen as its acting like launchpad. But if I click the "desktop" app, screen goes back to my OS X home screen but doesn't actually incorporate the desktop coherence functionality. It just closes the window and doesn't appear to be working. Then to get back into the windows 8.1 start menu I click back onto the windows 8.1 app in my menu, the VM reopens back into the start menu and if I click the desktop app it repeats the cycle.
 
On Windows 8.1 start screen, Desktop tile does not show desktop icons - it shows desktop apps.
To show Windows desktop in Coherence, press Win+D while in Coherence app or use View->Show Windows Desktop command.
