compressing Ubuntu VM's .hdd

I worked with an Ubuntu 7.10 VM for several weeks and during that time the VM's .hdd swelled to ~14 GB. Since the project completed, I've deleted several gigabytes of unnecessary stuff, but the .hdd file doesn't shrink -- is it supposed to? Or is this what Parallels Compressor is for? "Run Parallels Compressor" under the actions menu is always greyed out. I've done some searching and seen that I need to be an admin user to run it... I have admin rights but of course Ubuntu doesn't use the root account so I need to be prompted for it or I need to issue a sudo command. Anyone able to get me on the right track here?
 
OK, I finally remembered that I could RTFM. Looks like compressor is for Windows OSes only...
 
Still confused: after compacting via the VM settings while the VM was powered off, the hdd file is 13.44 GB... But Ubuntu's Disk Usage Analyzer says that 6.3 GB is used... why such a huge discrepancy?
