Configuring hard drive

Newbie here. And yes, I did a search of the forum, read the manual and online FAQ.

I'm trying to configure an external hard drive. It does not appear in the configuration menu. I am also given the following warning although my virtual drive is stopped:

"Attention! This virtual machine is suspended. You cannot edit virtual machine's configuration in this state. If you insist on editing, the virtual machine's suspended state will be dropped automatically.

Do you want to proceed with editing?"

please give more details

both OS

what hard drive access you are using USB / fire wire . . .

and which format the drive has

Mac OS treats NTFS drives as read only

I just USB plugged one into my old XP laptop and used the standard windows tools
