Connect to XP Mail Server on Parallels VM

How do I connect from my macOS to a mail server on parallels?

I've been trying to consolidate all my old work emails. I've put them all on my parallels XP installation.

Now I want to connect to my mail server on the XP installation but I can't. I get time out errors.

VM configured Network as a "bridged network" with dhcp. IP has been assigned from router (visible from router admin page). I can ping the macOS IP from XP, but I can't ping the XP IP at all.
 
Checking the firewall seems the most logical step. Do you have any anti-virus software? Try temporary uninstalling them.

I had disabled Windows Firewall already, but searched again and found anti-virus software. Un-installed and started over.


On virtual machine menu -> configure -> Network I selected Bridged adaptor -> Default. And then in Parallels Desktop menu -> preferences I selected "host-only" .

I went to cmd prompt window and typed ipconfig to get a new dhcp IP from local router ( and I could also see it from the local dhcp table on my router's admin webpage ) . Then i could ping, find mail server, etc. etc.

2nd question. now I am wondering why parallels has two separate network preferences menus; One in the VM menu and one in the Parallels Desktop preferences menu. Does one menu supersede the other?
 
Actually, the preferences in Parallels Desktop -> Preferences -> Network are for configuring additional settings for Host-only and Shared networking type. You can actually see the description here.

As far as I know, the settings you have made there should have no effect as long as you are in Bridged mode.
