Copying and saving file to Windows XP partition

I have installed Parallels 3.0 and Windows XP, both updated, and they work fine with some Windows-only programs. That includes MindManager, which I can open and work on, but I cannot save the new file nor access previous files saved on my PC and transferred to the Mac.

The MindManager Tech Support people suggest the following: "Please try copying the file to your Windows partition and open it either by double-clicking or from MindManager Button -> Open." So, how do I make sure that a file is copied or saved to my "Windows partition"?

Thank you, John for your prompt reply. I followed the instructions on the User Guide (page 133) and in order to add a "User-defined folder", I followed instructions on pages 168-170. Now on the Configuration Editor, Shared Folders tab the following boxes are checked: All Windows disks, Mount Virtual ..., Enable Spotlight, Home Folder, User-defined ..., Map folders ... The defined folder is My Maps (containing all my MindManager files) with correct path, and R/W Mode.

I've tried repeatedly to access different files; sometimes they show up but then the program closes with an eror message; sometimes just the error message appears.

I wonder if "Shared Folders" is what I need to set up, since I've installed the MindManager program in the Parallels Windows XP environment, which when open should access its files in the Users/imagineall/documents/My Maps folder. Can this folder be set up in a separate Windows XP-accessible environment partition, as MindJet suggests?

Please forgive my ignorance: I'm brand new to this. What do you suggest now?

No problem, forum is to ask question, feel free to ask any.
Ok, I suppose, Mindjet suggestion is to access those files from local disk?
I can suggest to try to Share those folders in Mac OS using Samba, and access network disks from Windows Xp like \\Mac.ip.add.ress\MyMaps

Btw, I was in opposite situation when using MindManger 7 for Mac and testing file access from Windows and there were no problem.

Maybe you can say what is error?
and what version you are using?
 
Thanks, John. Glad to find a fellow MindManager user - which I use for just about everything, and cannot do without! I use MindManager Pro7 for Windows, and have just updated to their last version v. 7.2.374, which required a totally new serial number for authentication, and is good only for installation on one computer only. I updated on the PC just before installing Parallels,and it shows having been activated. The error that's mentioned when I try to open a file says: "Mindjet MindManager Pro 7 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The Error Signature reads: "AppName: mindmanager.exe AppVer: 7.2.374.0 AppStamp:484e43a3
ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 ModStamp:411096b4
fDebug: 0 Offset: 000111de".

Then there is a long list of contents in the detailed "Error Report". Do you need more info?

I did as you suggested, and checked "File Sharing" in System Preferences. Now "other users can access computer at afp://192.168.1.39/ or browse for "Ronny Barkay's iMac".

How exactly (detailed please) can I now open a MM file once my program is open in Parallels/Windows desktop, because just clicking on the map still doesn't seem to do it?

John, your reply seems to be missing some lines, and therefore don't understand your reply. Are you saying that I have an unknown virus on the program or the files which is preventing me from using MM properly. I've used "avast" as my anti-virus program for years, and have installed it also on the Mac (Windows environment), and it is now up-to-date. I've never had any virus problems on the PC. I also had ZoneAlarm firewall installed on the PC, but not on the Mac, and it always caught rare attempts to infiltrate. Should I also use another anti-virus and firewall for the Mac side?

Whatever the case, what do you suggest I do, exactly.

Let us clarify further
In my case I do not have shared profile, I have Shared Folders, and saved file to Mac home folder and opened it without problem- I meant I got no error in MindManager saving and opened file.
Link I posted describe situation with Windows services to be stopped Ntlmsvc
you can stop it in Windows as following:

Start -Run -type cmd
in command console type

net stop ntlmsvc

But, I actually didn't mean viruses and firewall, however as I can see you mentioned Zone Alarm and Avast
May I suggest you to remove them temporary to check, they may cause such situation,
Remove, reboot VM and check (you can install them later)
if MindManager can open files without problems, then problem is in Antivirus and firewall
Also you can try repair MindManager from add/remove programs -change -repair
 
John, did as you suggested: a) Typed net stop ntlmsvc in command console - got Error 1060 'The specified service does not exist as an installed service'. b) Repaired MindManager in add/remove program. c) Uninstalled "avast" (I have not installed Zone Alarm), rebooted Parallels with XP, started MindManager again, could not open a file.

What do you suggest I do next? Should I meanwhile reinstall avast for anti-virus protection, or wait a while?

Thanks for your query John. I've been away for a few days.

When I click on Start, then My Documents, I get a list of all the folders which I transferred to the Mac's HD via an external Mac-formatted drive. All my Word documents appear as WordPad documents (on the Mac Documents side, the old Word documents are translated automatically into Word 2008 for the Mac), and those Word documents newly created on the Mac side I can only access from the Windows side if I choose "Word for Mac" as its program (Same thing with my Excel files). I seem to have no problem bringing up my photos from the different photo albums/folders. All MM folders and maps appear on the Windows-side list, but I cannot download them to the MM program, when I double click on them.

John, I've also contacted MindJet about this problem, first my query and then their reply, which I thought might also be helpful:

You cannot work with shared folders and you cannot drag and drop.
You will need to work exclusively within Parallels on the area designated as a Windows drive.
When you say you cannot access old files produced on the PC, you need to be more clear. What version of MindManager were they created with? Provide the build number if possible. What is the last version of MindManager that they were edited with? Where are you trying to open the files from? Can you send a sample of one of the maps?

Based on what they are saying how do I work exclusively within Parallels "designated as a Windows drive"?

John, to keep you up to date, I'm also sending hereby my reply to MindJet, without the attachments, because they are not in the list of file extensions.

I am currently using MindManager Pro7 v. 7.2.374 (6/10/2008). I believe that I received your e-mail announcing the update to this version on 6/13/2008, and decided to download the earlier version to the Parallels environment, to use my activation code for it (with no problems) and then update to this last version, with the new activation key that you sent me.

Some of the maps in MyMaps folder were created with Pro6, many with Pro7 (various versions). I will attach a map created sometime between January and March 2007 (I don't know how to look up the version or build of the MM that created it).

I have tried to open those files from the "Documents" folder on my Mac hard drive, as well as the "My Documents" > MyMaps folder. In each case, the map appears briefly on the MM desktop, then the "error warning" which closes MM. (Mindjet MindManager Pro 7 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.)

For your info, I had stored all my files, docs, pictures and music on a Maxtor OneTouch II external drive on the PC. I backed up all the files, formatted the external drive by the Mac, copied the files to the Maxtor, then copied all files from the Maxtor to the Mac hard drive. I believe I installed Parallels before transferring all files. All my photos and music files work fine, all my Windows Office XP files work well in their Mac counterparts. The files and folders showing on the Mac and in Parallels seem identical.

But in addition to not being able to open older files, today I can create a small file, I can save it, but I cannot open it again: I get the "error warning" that closes MM. I'm attaching that file.

Please be sure that you are opening these files from your C drive under Parallels. Do not open them from your Mac drive. Do not open them from your external drive. Send me a screenshot showing the FULL PATH to the file you are trying to open.

I guess I don't need to send you the files to check. The question is now how do I make sure that I open all the files from the C drive. Am I not doing so when I start MM in Windows, then open a file? Is the fact that I imported all the PC files to the Mac hard disk (and they are showing also on the Windows side) mean that the MM files need now to be Saved in or transferred to another place (C drive?) for MM to recognize them? If so, can you tell in detail how to do that?

Hallelujah, John! I copied the entire MyMaps folder to the "C" drive, opened a number of old files, modified a bit, and saved with no problems. After weeks of quiet desperation, and after considering possible suicide by jumping off the one inch height from my living room to my patio, I am now a fully observant religious convert to Parallels. It would really give me satisfaction to know that your solution might also help other users with similar problems. I shall now try to apply the same solution also to some other files for a web design program, which I started using just before the PC-Mac switch, although I did not make many files, and it's not urgent.

Thank you so much for your patience John, and for your continuous effort to try to find a resolution to my problem. I intend to sleep more soundly now.
