difficulty connecting to another computer by Ethernet

I'm running windows XP under Parallels on a MacBook Pro. I've selected Bridged Ethernet and the Ethernet Adapter for the Network Adapter. In OS X I set Ethernet to a fixed IP address. In xp I set a fixed IP address. My external computer (an embedded device) has a fixed IP address.

From OS X I can successfully ping the external device. From xp I can successfully ping OS X's IP address. However, when I try to ping the external device from xp I get a timeout.

Any idea what I've done wrong?

The point of this is to run a program in xp that collects data from the embedded device.

One more thing, I am wondering if this is just a specific problem in my computer or whether this is generic? Has anyone got Ethernet working? If so I'll spend the effort to work this out rather than wait for an update.

Both wired and wireless Ethernet work fine for me, moving between locations. I'm using DHCP for all connections.

You've probably thought of this, but since we're all human, you set a net mask to put all three machines on the same segment, right? And of course, all three machines have IP addresses that are unique on your network.
 
I believe the masks were the same but I'll double check the next time I visit the lab. The addresses are unique. There are only the two machines directly connected by a cable.
 
now working

I just wanted to report that this is now working for me. I'm not sure what fixed it. I did not have to reboot the Mac. I did quit and restart Parallels many times. I changed the network settings on the Mac several times. When I had a chance to try connecting to an instrument again it worked fine. I could ping from both the Mac and windows. Then I launched our software and it worked straight away.

FYI, I was able to use SnapZ Pro to take very nice movies of our software running in windows.
