Disable IR Receiver in Tiger

I would like to use the IR Receiver built into my McBook Pro, but checking the box under Devices for "IR Receiver" give the standard wait 5-10 seconds error. I have attempted to disable the IR Receiver through the Security Preferences, but it doesn't have an affect. Is there something else that should be disabled in the OS X to enable this in the Parallels VM (Win XP)?
