Disappearing Windows

so what's up with this? i start parallels 4 (build 3540) and start an application. i put parallels in coherence mode and everything disappears. the application i started is not visible, i can't see the start menu or the taskbar (usually i have it hidden anyway). the start menu does not appear when i click the parallels icon or use the command key. i put it back into windowed ( or full screen ) mode and everything is there...

vm configuartion:
1 cpu
1024 mb vm memory
128 mb video memory

1 monitor. displayed on the main display. i should add that if i restart the VM, coherence works again for a while.

spaces is disabled. i should add that it's not a constant situation. if i shut down the VM and restart it it works again for a while.
