Does the XP version HAVE to be SP2....

My version is XP Home SP0. Not SP1 Not SP2.
The requirements in the User Manual say "Windows XP Home SP0/SP1/SP2". I take this to mean any version of XP, not just the last one in the list.

Bootcamp must be XP SP2.

Parallels can be any of the ones you mentioned plus some older versions of Windows, plus Linux, plus OS/2.

So here I go! :)

My original XP install appeared to be successful but the install was only partially functional. An MS update install hung and failed in mid stream to the point I had to force a quit. I could not drag and drop, I could not copy and paste. My internet connection was OK but I could not get to MS Updates to try and find updates that might fix the problems because the MS update page would load blank. Other MS pages were fine, only the update page showed up without any contents. Clicking 'Update' in the start menu went nowhere, but I could get to MS commercial sites.
Finally, after it became apparent that no one here, or from an email I sent to Parallel was to offer any real help with my situation, I decided to simply start over. So I deleted the VM, Rebooted the Mac, and started over. Every attempt to reinstall XP either hung or crashed. Finally after 3 hours of trying everything I could think of, find here, and see in the Manual, while rebooting 'Tiger' between most steps. (I even uninstalled and reinstalled Parallels from the CD once during the three hour period to try and discard an update that I installed earlier) But that didn't accomplish anything either. And after the last attempt resulted in a continuous reboot cycle buy the installer, and totally frustrated by something that should have been sooo simple, I deleted the VM and uninstalled Parallels.

Oh Well....So much for that!!!

And, to use Boot Camp, Or even Fusion, I'll have to buy an XP that contains SP2...but now I'm scared... that I will waste that money too. :(

I guess I'll just have to use my Oooold XP laptop and a flash drive.....:(

Most of the problems with installing windows xp is that it is always with oem versions, SP 0 and SP1. I have tested it myself (have 2 retail versions with sp2 and one with sp1). You can gues the 2 with sp2 worked fine, the other :(

So the best way to solve this problem is that you get a retail version with sp2

I'm not surprised. I suspected it was an SP2 issue, even though XP/0 is listed as supported. My version is a retail version, just without the service packs.
 
I have a full SP1 version of Win XP and it installs fine. However, when I run the VM it sometimes just bombs out with the blue screen of death which flashes up. The blue screen says something like "I'm protecting your computer and shutting it down". I try to update to XP2 via the software update but it always fails due to "couldn't verify data". I'm downloading the 266 MB multicomputer install of SP2 as I write this. We'll see what happens. So far, I'm disappointed with my Parallels / XP experience.

Question: Could the Parallels memory setting have an effect on the crashes? What is the "Virtual Memory Preallocation"? Does this setting have an affect on stability?
