Enable Hibernate in WinXP VM

Hello,

Because of a repartitioning failure on my iMAC with 1GM RAM, I needed to reformat and reinstall MAC OS 10.4 as well as Parallels for MAC build 1940. However, unlike the previous installation, the hibernate option is no longer available under WinXP Home, control panel, power options. The hibernate function worked well for me in the previous installation and I would like to re-enable it.

According to Windows help, if hibernate is not an option, there is a Windows hardware reason that this is so.

Any suggestions/ideas as to how to tweak the WinXP virtual machine to enable hibernate.

Finally, it does seem that the suspend function of the virtual machine is very similar to hibernate in Windows, i.e. write state info to disk before shutting down. Is this a correct conclusion?

The pause function in Parallels will cause the VM to stop using processor resources, but will not release memory. The suspend function will write the state of the VM to the host disk as a .sav file, and shut down the guest (power off). This releases all VM resources back to the host. You can shut down Parallels after suspend, and restart it and restore at will.

A paused VM will not survive a host shutdown, but a suspended VM can be restored after a host restart.

The suspend is the equivalent of hibernate on real hardware. I can't think of a reason other than testing to use hibernate in a guest. I'm a bit surprised it worked at all, but if it stopped working, it may be because hibernate requires a file on the virtual HD, or a hibernate partition on the virtual HD. I've stayed with Win2k and avoided XP, primarily because I'm constantly either breaking or rearranging machines (I'm a software developer) and don't need MS' activation hassle. In fact, activation is another good reason to have a Mac. <grin>

As it turns out, I must not have properly reinstalled Parallels Tools. When I did, the hibernate capability returned inside WinXP. Go figure. So I can suspend or hibernate now. I got into the habit of hibernate with native WinXP because of the drastically shortened boot time.
