Error 1606

I'm using Parallels 6 on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.4) with Windows XP SP3 (no Boot Camp at all). I am trying to uninstall a program in Windows, but I keep getting an error message: Error 1606 Could not access network location \\.psf\Home\Documents.

I can see my Documents folder as a shared drive, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I have installed and reinstalled Parallels Tools (both installations went easily), so that's probably not the issue.

I will add that I've only had this MacBook Pro for several months; prior to that I had a MacBook and used Migration Assistant to move all of my files and so on over. Things went very smoothly there, so I don't think that's the problem, either. Of course, I know next to nothing about Windows, so I could very easily be wrong. <G>

In PD6, we have removed the dot from the "\\.psf" name, because some programs couldn't handle it.
Looks like the uninstaller tries to use the old naming "\\.psf\Home\Documents". You can remove the program by using the .msi file. The uninstaller should offer you an option to choose this file.
 
Thanks, but it didn't offer me any option to use an .msi file. (What is an .msi file?) How do I make it do that? Thanks again.
 
A file with the ".msi" extension is a distrubution package. You might have used such from your Documents folder previously to install the program. If so, locate the file and open it as if you want to install the program again. The installer should offer you an option to uninstall the program.
If this does not help, please reproduce the issue once again and generate a problem report, when you see the "Error 1606". Then post here ID of the report. To generate a problem report, go to PD menu, choose Help->Report a Problem. It will also be helpful if you tell what program you want to uninstall and whether I can download it from somewhere. Thank you for helping us make our product better.
 
Thanks, but this application wasn't installed from a package on my computer. It came on a CD. I just tried going through the installation process again, in hopes that the CD would also give me the option to reinstall, but it also hung on the same error as I had from the Add/Remove option in the Control Panel.

I'm guessing that my problem is serious enough that I'm going to need to reinstall Windows and all of my applications. I wish Windows would allow a reinstallation that didn't require also redoing all the apps, like my Mac does, but no such luck. :S

I am unfortunately having this same problem, but there is no 'uninstaller' for Encompass360 (the software I'm trying to uninstall)

Do you have any other suggestions?

There is no installer for this program, you download it straight from elliemae and it runs kinda off their website if I understand it correctly.

Either way theres no MSI that I can find that lives on my PC.
 
Sandy may have been able to just reinstall.. .that wont work for me.

Can anyone help me out? I'm trying to uninstall Encompass360 (EllieMae Windows Software) but i cannot for this same '.' before the psf issue.

There is no uninstall (or install) (.msi) package that I can tell that lives on my machine... theres got to be a work around for this.

Can anyone help?
 
If you can figure out why the uninstall wants to go to .psf, then maybe you can change that to psf. Maybe try searching the Windows registry for .psf. Or maybe there's an .ini file somewhere that contains .psf. Don't change anything that doesn't look related to the app that you're trying to uninstall.

Also try talking to the developers of the software you're trying to uninstall. Maybe they can help you out.

Parallels should provide an option or method to go back to the old .psf name for cases like this.
 
Still in the same position. I'm about to just delete this virtual machine and just start over. I dont know what else to do otherwise.

UPdates in parallels, and I still haven't seen an ability to go back.

Before I pull the trigger on starting a new VM, does anyone have any futher suggestions for me? I looked through the registry but I really dont feel confident enough with my knowledge level to play with that.
 
Uninstall Parallels Tools, shutdown the virtual machine, uninstall Parallels Desktop 6, install Parallels Destkop 5, run the virtual machine, uninstall the program, shutdown the virtual machine, reinstall Parallels Desktop 6.

If Parallels Desktop 5 doesn't work on your current version of Mac OS X, you could try installing an earlier version of Mac OS X (one that is supported by your Mac) to a new partition and install Parallels Desktop 5 there.
