FAT32 or NTFS Harddisk not found

Hi,

During Windows XP SP2 installation from a CD, the installtion aborts since the process can't find a harddisk to install WIN XP in either FAT32 or NTFS format. Did anybody run into this issue before? Thank you in advance for your help.

We, potential repliers, do assume that you had previously created a Hard Disk from the VM's preferences and set it as Hard Disk 1. I can't remember but during the installation process you should also tell to create a volume (NTFS or FAT32) inside there.

Yes I did create a harddisk during the process. However, I have done it through automated (recommended process), so a step to choose the harddisk format didn't appear. I have repeated the process in the manual form again and I didn't come across such a selection either. Can you please let me know where or what step I should look for this harddisk format selection? Thank you.
 
Would like to be more helpful but unfortunately I've installed Win Xp just twice so I can't remember at which step you are requested to choose the format but certainly not in Parallel but into the WinXP installer and (again) certainly during the first steps of installation. If I do remember well the default format is NTFS.
It could be really useful to convert the WinXP Install CD from Tiger's Disk Utility into a .CDR image and select it in Parallels as the CD-ROM to boot from. This will let you have the CD always with you and it will be a lot faster if you'll try more than one installation.
 
I understand what you mean with the NTFS step during a regular WIN XP installation. However, I think when using Parallels it is a little different. For some reason it is not recognizing the harddrive to format. I will keep on trying and wait a Parallels representative to respond. Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.

Ok, a couple of questions to start investigation:
1. Did you notice any differencies between WinXP installation into PD and regular PC?
2. Is it standard WinXP installation CD? Or maybe it's some kind of specially prepared one?
3. Can you please post here a kind of installation log in form "During the installation, WinXP shows me the screen where I should ... and prompts me for.... I press ... button."

Hi,

I can run the CD on a regular PC and it works fine. It is a specially prepared CD by my company.

Here is what happens: As soon as I run the VM, installation CD tries to install WIN XP. In a PC environment it would look for a harddrive to format and it is trying to do same and it issues to error messages: one after it completes it search for a FAT32 formatted harddrive and the other after it looks for NTFS formatted harddisk. Once it fails to find both, it prompts to drive "A" as if there is a floppy drive.
 
So, the disk searches for already-formatted drives? Is it correct? Are there any tools included in the installation CD that allow partition table management and subsequent formatting?

What is the usual procedure of WinXP installation inside your company? (you may want to send this info in personal messages to me since it seems too sensitive)
 
You are right. The disk looks for a formatted drive. Shouldn't it?

There are no specific tools available in the CD.

Typically WinXP is installed via a CD like the on ethat I am using and sometimes it is installed from an image.
