Help!! Kernel panics with some recent versions of Parallels

After a 100% trouble free experience with Parallels from the time it was originally launched as a Beta, I installed version 3106 on 31 December ... and everything soon started going wrong.

My MacBook Pro with 2.33GHz/3GB RAM started getting frequent kernel panics, especially if I had several tabs open in Safari. I also started getting a lot of memory corruption issues in applications which until then had been rock solid. It started getting kernel panics at 5-60 minute intervals to the point where I could hardly get anything done.

I backed the computer up, reformatted the drive and went through the painful process of entirely reinstalling my software. Not once but twice. Each time it took me more than a day. Then I lost my entire hard disk contents when one kernel panic must have occurred just as critical data was being written to disk. Unfortunately this happened in the middle of a mission critical operation and caused me untold anguish.

When the computer had been restored again I resolved to uninstall Parallels. I did so and Kernel panics immediately went away. Just after that version 3120 arrived. I installed it, and everything has been fine. The Rock solid reliability that I was used to returned again. No problems at all. Very happy again. I thought you must have solved the problem.

Then a few days ago 3150 was released, so I immediately downloaded it and installed it. Guess what? More kernel panics. I've had them three times today, all when using Safari. I also got a memory corruption problem using DevonThink ... which NEVER lets me down.

I have now uninstalled 3150 again ... and no further problems.

Whatever the problem is, it must be found, as it is causing mayhem with my system.

Meantime, can I reinstall 3120 without any problems?

It's strange that kernel panics have been all but unknown to me since I started using OSX in 2001 ... yet these recent releases of Parallels have clearly been causing me massive problems.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Can anybody suggest what to do?

Try installing 3150 directly, not as an upgrade.

Yes, but then you don't get the functionality now do you? Also I can't say that I've ever found an OS or OS equivalent that didn't have bugs esp in betas, RCs and even initial full version releases, including Unix.
 
Virtualization SW for OS X seems to be a tricky issue. Parallels seems to work perfectly for some and others have issues.

My MacBook (2.0GHz C1D) has never had a problem with any build of parallels but builds after 3106 (excluding 3150) resulted in KPs on my MacPro.

What does your crash log say?

For me, and some others, it appeared to be related to the hypervisor module running and network/share access (I'd get a KP every time I ejected a share - ipod, external drive, or other machine logged to or from the desktop machine).

Build 3150 seems to have "fixed" these issues on my desktop machine.

You are running a C2D, yes?

These betas seem to result in issues with little or no apparent pattern but most seem to have few, if any problems.

Uninstall Parallels and reinstall 3120, if that works for you. I uninstalled 3120 and reverted to 3106 for a time, which worked fine.

Email your crash report to beta@parallels.com as well.
 
Have uninstalled 3150, as suggested, and re-installed it again. No KPs so far, but it's early days. Just had Safari quit on me ... which is not a good sign.

My last few crash logs are shown below. I lost the main body of them when my hard drive was messed up. The ones between Jan 10 and Jan 12 were using build 3106. As soon as I uninstalled it, then installed 3120 there were no problems. The logs dated 5 Feb were after 3150 was installed over 3120.

Nearly all of the log entries have referred to (CPU 0, Type 14=page fault) ... I don't know how to interpret these, but it suggests a memory-related problem, but what do I know, I'm only guessing. Perhaps these logs will mean something to someone, in which case, your thoughts would be appreciated:

Memory

I have Parallels set up to use 1 GB of memory, and I'm running Win XP. In a way that's irrelevant, because all these KPs have occured when Parallels ISN'T running.

To be frank, I haven't really used Parallels much since I started having these problems ... but there are times I need to use it quite heavily.

When previous builds of Parallels was KP'ing my machine, it was related to the hypervisor module and network access. Parallels was never running when it tanked.

At first I thought the RAM must have been faulty, but ran every check I could and it all came up fine. When I uninstalled Parallels the problem immediately stopped, so I'm pretty certain the RAM is not the problem.

I have now downloaded rember, and will run it when I next leave the machine unattended. Thanks for the suggestion.

Uninstalled 3150, re-installed 3120. Still massive problems. Affected Mail, MS Word and DevonThink Pro, caused them to quit all the time. Had another Kernel panic. Decided enough was enough. Uninstalled 3120. No more problems, but also no Parallels.
