help with networking/file sharing

hi,
I am a long term mac user (since 1984)- this is my first experience with parallels and linux. (sorry for the re-post- I managed to post this in the wrong place previously).

I have successfully installed ubuntu 8.04 and parallels 3.0 (B5604), including parallels tools (which was quite a challenge). These are on my mac mini with Leopard (10.5.3). My mac's network goes through a linksys router (WRT54G2) (a wireless router but the mac is on a wired port), and from there to roadrunner cable.

My real goal here is to be able to do file/folder sharing between my mac OS and ubuntu. I've gone around in circles with all the manuals and searching on line and on these forums for the past 24 hours and I haven't really gotten anywhere. I haven't been able to get ubuntu on my network. Most of the documentation I've seen is for older versions of the software I have; also, I'm relatively inexperienced network-wise (or actually: I've been spoiled all these years: I've been a mac guy, and it's easy on a mac); and directions which leave out vital information or critical steps generally leave me in the dust. I've tried a number of third party software solutions and none have worked. I'm not really interested in internet access with ubuntu- I can do that fine on my mac as it is. I just want to be able to share files between leopard and ubuntu.

If anybody can point me to some reference or set of clear directions that can enable me to set up networking on this, and/ or do file sharing with my mac, I'd be very grateful.

figured it out

In case anybody's interested:

To set up network access:

in parallels:
1. Edit>Virtual Machine, click on Network Adapter 1.
2. enable "enabled", connect cable at startup, and shared networking
3. click OK

in Ubuntu:
1. System>Administration>Network, opens a window called Network Settings
2. click on Unlock
3. enter ubuntu password
4 .click on wired connection
5. click on properties
6. for configuration, choose automatic configuration (DHCP)
7. click OK
8. close network settings window
9. check your connection, e.g., go online with firefox

to share files between leopard and ubuntu/parallels:
(to reiterate: I did this with parallels 3.0 B5604, including the Parallels Tools, ubuntu 8.0.4, and os X 10.5.3)

in os x:
1. system preferences>sharing
2. if file sharing is not already enabled, turn file sharing on in the box on the left
3. specify shared folders and users
4. note your mac’s IP address, where it says, “Other users can access your computer at afp://xxx.xxx.x.xxx/ or browse for "xxxxx". Write down the xxx.xxx.x.xxx/ part
5. click on Options
6. enable Share files and folders using SMB
7. enable the mac user account you are going to share
8. an authenticate box will pop up. enter your mac user account password and click OK
9. click done to close the share files and folders box
10. close the sharing window

11. go back to ubuntu
12. Places>Connect to Server
13. for service type, select windows share, enter your mac’s IP address that you wrote down, including the last “/â€
14. enter your mac user name in the User Name and Share fields
15. enable “add bookmark†and enter a name for the bookmark, e.g., macshare
16. click connect
17. a window will appear, “Can’t display location... “. Ignore this, click on OK.
18. There will also be an icon on your ubuntu desktop showing the shared volume on your mac.

The next time you start up ubuntu/parallels, under places, the bookmark you entered will take you to the shared folder on your mac.
