Host : XP Guest : Mandriva - No GUI

Hi,

I have installed mandriva as the guest os. During installation at the last stage it said that I haven't configured x ( I am a newb in linux ) - so I selected Nvidia and GeForce 4 generic from the list. After that the installation completed smoothly. But when I loaded mandriva - instead of starting in the graphical interface, it started in the console mode. So I googled a bit and it said to execute "startx" - so I did it. But nothing..........

I have attached two files - a log file that was in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and a screenshot.

Any help would be much appreciated ........

From the command line, change to root (type su and enter the password). Edit the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and find the Devices section. In there, change the driver to vesa and then try to log in again.
You can try nano to edit the file or if not, you'll have to use something cryptic like vi.

Thanks for the reply - I changed that ( just the driver part - driver "nvidia" to driver "vesa", nothing else, not even the name part which was still Geforce 4 generic - could this be the problem ? ).

Unfortunately it doesn't boot now.... any suggestions - I've attached the screenshot ...?

[ PS : is there a way to boot in the console mode again for now ]

Why don't you reinstall and choose vesa as your video driver?

Hmm... reinstalling and choosing vesa seems to have solved the problem... Thanks a lot....

But graphics is way too slugish and the screen is not rendered properly.... so I've decided to switch to console mode... that seems to be the fun way of doing stuff anyway :)
