how to change virtual machine names

I have say a virtual machine with name on my Mac Desktop like : MyXP.

But if I look to the list of virtual machines in the Parallels menu, I find something like XP111311311(2)(1)(2), a name which is getting worse and worse every time I copy this virtual machine and restart from a copy, etc. How can I change this name and get it to respond to the name I want to give it ?

In general why Parallels cannot keep the name I am giving to my virtual machines ?

This is known behaviour.
To solve it please do the following:
Start Parallels Desktop, right click on dock icon, choose Virtual Machines list
right click on your machine, choose remove, and keep files.
go to you user folder in Finder, find Applications(Windows) folder and remove it.
locate your "Windows.pvm" file (name is different) in Finder, right click and rename.
Double click pvm file so that it became registered within Parallels Desktop app, start and check the performance.

However this does not work "as it" and does not appear tosolve satisfactorily the problem. I find surprising that such a bug present at least since V3 is not yet solved in V6.

The situation : when I do your first step (remove VM and keep files) then the Folder of the VM inside the Applications(Windows) folder has already disappeared. No need to remove it. Then I rename the pvm file. But when launching it Parallels still uses the old name. Nothing changed.

I can do also something else I have noted : in the virtual machine list, I can change the name of the virtual machine, instead of deleting it and then if I remove the Applications(Windows) folder, Parallels will recreate a new one with the new name. However whatever changes I do, to the name of the pvm file are never taken into consideration as virtual machine names by Parallels. And after it still continues to add numbers.

I hope this bug is corrected soon.

I have changed the name in the window shawn in your link. But this does not change the name of the VM in Mac finder.
There is no connection between both. And the Parallels name keeps changing.

Anyway I will survive it. Only frustrating.

I don't know if anyone is still watching this thread (it's now 5 years later) but I just had the same problem and solved it (almost).
I had installed Windows 7 as a VM and then upgraded it to Windows 10. Although I had changed the VM name in Parallels Control Panel from Win 7 VM to Win 10 VM the name in Finder was still Win7VM. In Windows 10 Control Panel/System I changed the name from Win7VM to Win10VM and after a restart the name in finder had changed to Win10VM. The only difference is that Windows does not allow spaces in the name whereas Parallels does. I suppose I could remove the spaces in Parallels but its now close enough for me.
