Driving myself nuts trying to figure out how to get alt-F1 alt-F2 etc key combinations working in a linux virtual machine running on OSX natively.

All that happens is the default behaviour of the f-keys shows up (brightness, etc), or I launch other OSX shortcuts to the preferences panel, for example.

Can someone provide some help as to remap or override this with parallels? Or does it have to be remapped on the linux side?

Normally pressing the Fn key along with the function key itself reverses the action of the F-key. So if they're set to do brightness/volume etc then they act as a F1/F2... if they're set to act as F1/F2 etc then they'll perform their special action (brightness/volume).

These actions are set in OS X within System Preferences.

System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard tab:
Check or un-check the box by "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features"
