How to manually uninstall parallels tools under safe mode?

I'm having problems after upgrading from 3188 to 4560 / 5560. I think this may be because of the old Parallels Tools. I can't successfully boot into windows to install the new Parallels tools. I can boot into windows using either Bootcamp or Safe Mode under Parallels.

However, when I try to uninstall Parallels Tools using the Add/Remove Programs control panel, I get the message "Parallels Tools require that your Windows is running under Virtual Machine. The installation will be stopped." This happens both under Bootcamp or Safe Mode.

Is there a way to force it to uninstall? Or can I manually delete the components?

Note that I've tried booting into safe mode and using the menu command to install Parallels tools but it always hangs (waited over two hours) at "Configuring your installation..."

I had the same problem here. Parallels Support give me following solution:

1. Load the Boot Camp partition.
2. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run and type regedit. Click OK.
The Registery Editor appears.
3. In the Registery Editor, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ and
delete the Parallels folder. Close the editor.
4. Load Mac OS.
5. Open the VM that uses the Boot Camp partition with Parallels Desktop
 
How I fixed

Here's how I fixed this problem; not all of these steps may be necessary:

* (Re)install parallels (I used the latest beta, 5120).
* Run the XP install CD (under bootcamp), and choose R (repair);
* Reboot into windows under bootcamp.
* Delete the registry keys under HKLM/Software/Parallels
* Reboot into Mac, run Parallels, reinstall parallels tools.
I chose "custom" and didn't install "Application Sharing,"
"Web Application Sharing," and one other that I can't remember
that I had read causes problems.
* Reboot Parallels VM.
* Reactive windows.
