How to survive upgrade STORM!

0. always backup vm's prior to doing the upgrade.

1. make you you do a complete shut down of guest OS and not sleep/hibernate prior to upgrade.

2. set your memory under preferences manually. I have a mac mini with2 gig and i have it set to 808 mb.
- [ ] Enable virtual memory preallocation (unchecked)

3. turn off eye-candy under preferences/appearance
- Show applications in Dock: Never
- Dock Icon: Default
- Full Screen: [ ] (unchecked)

4. do NOT have your vm start up in coherence mode (it is trivial to switch it at startup) and this way when an upgrade comes in the coherence mode doesnt hinder the parallel tools install.

5. When you first enter the guest vm just after upgrade let parallel tools do it's thing and ignore any other notices, like AV update or new hardware found. and let Parallel tools restart your VM.


Your mileage may vary, but i've run Parallels from the start and particpated in all beta but last one (i was busy with other projects). I have a mac mini 1.66 gig with 2 gig of ram. my XP pro starts in 20-25 seconds. I sailed thru the version 3 upgrade with no problem

I use AVG for anti-virus, and spybot for anti-spyware.

All good advice. In fact disabling any anti-virus is always a good choice too. Way back when I first migrated, Spy Sweeper did not like what Tools was trying to do... So i had to disable it whenever I did the other updates. Always a good call to make, just in case. But even then, I can say from experience and reading the boards... it seems to be a crap shoot with what is obviously a very buggy not ready for release app.

with the afore mentioned settings, I have not seen any issues. So hence it is not a buggy release in my perception.

This is not to discount your perception, but be careful not to think your preceptions is anyone else's or the norm.

Maybe one of these days you will sit on the developers side and have to take the firey darts, like those you are shooting. When was the last time you were motiviated to action by someone denigrading your actions.

In my assessment in reading your posts, the issue is entirely all on your side. for one thing . Uninstall spy sweeper and go to them and ask for your money back, I had this product and it was slow and caused all sorts of problems. Another seach for a registry cleaner will get rid of most of your slowness - Registry Booster is a great one.

also find a product on the web called HiJackThis and run it. you can PM me and I can help you get your setup cleaned up.
