As a result of a number of similar cases we've had, we've performed various tests on a physical Windows Arm PC, and we had to conclude and there doesn't appear to be a way to successfully run SQL Server products (including SQL Server Express/Compact etc.) on a Windows Arm machine, physical or virtual.

These results are consistent with the information that can be found on the Internet in regard to running Microsoft Server on Windows ARM.

Windows 10 is no longer supported on Arm computers. Also the version of Windows does not depend on it, sql server does not work on Arm architecture computers.

I'm in the same boat. I need to be running SQL Server in windows 11 for my Geophysical software which is windows based to run properly. If you find a solution to this in the future, please post clear instructions on how to do it here for future users with the same problem.

 

Any problems in running it in docker? you can choose to run it in docker and still access it from any other VM or from the host itself

 

do you try with SQL Server 2014 ?? i try with 2022,2020,2016, and amazing with 2014 works fine

 

The above post should have said "x86-x64" and not "x84-x64". I apologize but as soon as I wanted to post this as quickly as possible to let people know there's an easy way to do it without the need for Docker or an emulation solution. The scripts I linked to above worked like a charm for me!

 

Is there a way I can access the SQL Server run using Docker on my M1 from Visual Studio on my Windows Virtual Machine( also run on my M1)?

 

I can't help you with getting it going through Docker but you can get it going using a Parallels VM if you spin one up on your M1 Mac running the ARM version of Windows 11. There are scripts to let you install SQL 2019 or SQL Server 2022, either the Express or Developer Editions, plus SQL Server Management Studio within the VM.

I'm assuming there's a specific reason why you want to use Docker versus a Windows on ARM VM to host it but if not then why not go the VM route instead? I prefer that to Docker.

So the only thing you need to do is decide which version you want to install then download the appropriate batch file for that version, save it to a new folder that you create with a short folder name off of the root of the C: drive then either open a command prompt and run it as the administrator and then execute the batch file from the command line.

I don't know how much the scripts have been modified but when I ran them after SQL Server installed each script would then install SQL Server Management Studio v19. The latest version today is v20 but v19 works just fine with SQL Server 2022 and 2019 and in v20 it tries to connect by default using security options you won't have setup so if you want a version of SQL Server Management Studio that "just works" without adjusting the default connection options then stick with SQL Server Management Studio v19. v20 was just released back in March so v19 will be just fine for a long time to come and it will be easier for you to connect to SQL server from it using the default connection options.
