Internet connection - wireless success, wired not working

I run a 17" MBP w/ 2GB RAM.

Wireless internet has been awesome anywhere I go and works wonderfully with both OS X and Windows. But for whatever reason, it is not the same with a wired connection. When I connect the network cable into my laptop, the OS X internet works great but Windows doesn't pick up a signal at all.

I've been into the command prompt and ipconfig to see my settings, all of which look normal since I have a local IP address. When I release and renew, I pick up the same IP addresses for all of my settings.

However, I am not able to ping the default gateway, which I assume is controlled by Parallels software. When I try pinging, it times out the connection.

I have not tried any other wired connections to see if it's just this connection, but I don't understand why that would matter.

I've had no problem with this using Shared Networking.
 
Oh, Shared Networking must have been the problem. I thought it WAS shared but I guess not. I had Default Networking in use but when I clicked on Shared Networking, it fixed the Internet problems. Thanks!

Yes, I find that Shared Networking has worked very well as a default for me. Perhaps I don't really understand the value in the other options -- perhaps those potential values aren't that important to me -- but Shared Networking "works" and makes some other issues less problematic.
