Is there any way to increase the probability of reclaim... working?

I just deleted a huge software package (Qt) from my Windows 7 VM, which leaves me about 48 Gbytes of reclaimable space.
Of course, when I tried to reclaim it, the process got to about 30% and then hung for several hours, using no CPU time, memory, or disk access. When I killed it, it (again, of course) left the VM image corrupted and ususable.

Luckily, this isn't my first rodeo with "Reclaim..." bugs, so I knew to make a backup before I tried to do it. Unfortunately, I'm still left with 50 Gbytes of wasted disk space, which I really can't spare.

    My questions are:
    a) Are there any steps I can take to increase the probability of Reclaim working the next time? For example, what if I defrag the disk in Windows? It takes about an hour to restore the image from the backup, so I don't want to just try random stuff.
    b) Is v15 any better on this issue, and if not, is the company *ever* planning to address all the problems with Reclaim...?
