Keys for single user mode boot - ubuntu 11.04

I've been searching the internet for info on how to boot Ubuntu into single user mode when running under Parallels. So far I've found references to Grub and rEFIt but don't understand how to use them or if they would apply since running under Parallels. Regular unix or primary boot from a unix computer would be a combination of keys to initiate single user mode boot. But I'm not really sure that the keyboard is even active during the Ubuntu boot under Parallels.

Why do I need to know? I've forgotten the root password and need to reset or re-install.

Appreciate if someone could point to a document or indicate the keyboard is not known to Ubuntu during the boot process under Parallels.

There are two posts with the same question, no answers.... Does anyone have a solution?
 
One solution

Startup with an ubuntu 11.04 install image and run the "Live Demo."

Open a terminal and cd to /media.
do an ls and you will see your HD image. (a long string)
cd /media/<hd identification>/etc.
sudo vi shadow
(or you can use your preferred editor)
Find the line with your login id.
delete the long string after the first colon and the second colon in that line.
save.
reboot.
you will have no password and you can login to reset your password.
Note you may want to make a backup of shadow just in case you muck up the edit.
