Known problems with using Win XP Academic Edition CDs with Parallels?

I am trying to setup my first VM on my Intel-based Mac, using a (perfectly legit) Academic Edition copy of Windows XP Professional.

The setup process seems to consider this an Upgrade edition and is prompting me for a "full version" of Windows XP to confirm that I am entitled to the upgrade.

I can only imagine this is something to do with using the academic edition?

Can anyone confirm or help me out here?

you need another CD

you have got the upgrade cd at academic price

Yes, the academic version of Windows XP Professional is an upgrade, not the full version. You will need to have a CD of a previous version of Windows (95, 98, Me, 2000) and the setup program will then check the old version CD and then allows you to proceed with the Setup.

you could try downloading one of the boot disks from bootdisk.com and mount the image in your floppy drive settings in parallels and direct the setup application to the floppy drive when it looks for a qualifying product.

I fixed the problem using the (Win 2k) OEM disk that came with the laptop that I was previously running this version of XP on.

I didn't do the Win XP install so it had not dawned on me that it was actually an upgrade!
