When I click on the Parallels icon to launch 5160, I get the above error. I can choose to "reopen", and Parallels launches, but otherwise I can always reproduce this error. Does anyone else have this problem?

Parallels, do you have any ideas on how I can fix this?

    Thanks!

yes, multiple times since I've installed.

I've been with parallels from the start and this by far is most troublesome release ever. for me that is.

I think features should be put to the public, because the current set of beta testers are not representative of all the users.

One more lockup or just disappearing and im going back to previous version.

I think that was build 4560, can someone confirm that?

    5160 is fine here

Do make certain you have about 20% free space on the Macintosh HD and on the VM drive C

I had to rush out and buy another La Cie FW 800
and move files over to free up the Mac

and now with cloning weekly Irun the VM from the external disk

    seems better alround too

20% free, what does that mean?
So if have a HD with 100gig and you want to run parallels you can't use 20gig of it?

I have over the required 20% on both Mac HD and VM C: drive.

I have turned off all the BS eye candy and this thing just slows down, exits and i mean just goodbye. or just locks up whole Mac. No difference in VM, no new Software on vm.

Wish i had more but this, this is just random. Can i install earlier version of parallels over newer. I've never had to come to this, I knew I shouldn't have installed a release on 9/11

My installation is a Bootcamp partition. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Paralllels without success.

    Ditto.

    I have the same problem.

Parallels 3.0 had been working wonderfully on my new MacBok Pro and I enjoyed showing it off to others, too.

However since the last update, it no longer works. Forget the candy, my productivity is down as a result. How do you fix it?

Trying to use the uninstall .app results in a crash. So, I manually removed the folder from applications and all the virtual machines, trying to flush everything. Popped in the disk for a fresh reinstall. After "successful" reinstall, trying to launch Parallels just results in crashes.

Please let me know what to do because this situation is hurting me.

Edit: I did try solutions in the forum, but they are not helping. For example,

    rm /Users/<username>/.parallels_settings
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Parallels
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Receipts/Parallels.pkg
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/Parallels.app
    sudo rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/Parallels
    sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.parallels.Parallels.plist
    sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Parallels
    sudo rm -rf ~/.parallels_settings
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/hypervisor.kext
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/vmmain.kext
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/Pvsnet.kext

All from another thread, but did not work.

I look forward to anyone who can help. Seems to me if I cleared everything out like this, then it should have been a clean re-install and therefore should have worked. Any ideas on the problem?

    Hello?

Does Parallels/Nova answer these forums? I'm a paying customer.

In trying to solve the problem, I threw the baby out with the bathwater (read: no longer have the VMs or anything). As far as I know, there is nothing related to Parallels currently on my system.

I'll try the link you gave and see if that's different from the boxed CD. Thanks!

    Nope.

Just like the CD, that disk image you suggested was able to install without problems. But trying to launch the Parallels Desktop (app) immediately crashes.

Clearly something in the recent update/patch (5160?) is still preventing me from using the software. At this point, I just want to get back to the CD version, if possible, since I can no longer trust automatic updates.

Any other helpful ideas? I appreciate the response.

Thanks. I tried the 5160 uninstaller tonight, but the app just crashes immediately when I try to use it.

So, aside from the list of commands posted earlier, are there some others I don't know about?

Any other ideas? I'm confused and distraught.

    Updated

I've just learned how to find the crash logs for OS X. Funny thing is the dates being reported are wrong. I cleared all the logs, then afterward I attempted the 5160 uninstaller again tonight (despite what the reported dates say).

    it is surprising
I don't even know what a kernel panic is

    I use the dock
    and right click
    "keep in dock"

    "open at log in"

returning to the Mac OS after using windows for 5 years
I took a lot of time to learn the updates in the Mac OS

keyboard short cuts are unchanged but i had forgottten most of them

but the dock was quite new to me and took a while to learn
I keep it on the left side

    Power users on the mac
don't hack around in the file system
    (like the legacy DOS stuff)

but just use the GUI as is

I recently attended an Adobe CS3 seminar where a MacBook Pro was used and watched two power users at work

put my videophone notes into a set
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/hughw36/sets/72157602176100913/
    for you guys

    all a bit blurred
but an idea of what can be done from a MacBook Pro and projected onto a large screen in a digital equiped cinema

I was thrilled to see they use the Dock in the same way that I do

BTW Greg Rewis is a Parallels user too

The only time I got kernel panic was when my memory was bad. I got bad stick as upgrade from CDW.

Parallels were often associated as they loaded memory which was not usually used.

Replaced memory stick and all is well from then on. Never seen kernel panic again with any Parallels version or any other program...

I suggest you try to reseat the memory sticks or, if at all possible swap them (borrow DDR2 notebook memory from some other notebook, there is nothing specific on them).

This may not be your problem, but it is worth the try. I suspect most of kernel panic issues are hardware related, unless you are really creative...

Agreed. Parallels isn't tripping off the Kernel panics left and right anymore.

I'm on a MacBook, which means I'm not too keen on breaking open the box and rummaging around inside. Finding other RAM to swap it with may not be an easy task either.

Of course, from my vantage point these errors started only after the recent update. It was immediate. One moment I was using v3.0 and all was well, the next minute it was post-update and nothing worked.

I'll see what I can do, but my VMware Fusion trial works fine for example.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

I found that Parallels pointed out the bad section of my RAM on my server, it turned out the memory had become unseated when moving it from one location to another. No other program was bumping into the problem, I don't know why, but that was the case.

I know on the PB and MBP the RAM is under the battery, it is probably similar with the MB. Do you have an Apple Tech nearby?

More 5160 "crash on launch" woes....

...but for me, it doesn't seem to matter WHAT build I try to run!

It's completely intermittent: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Absolutely no rhyme or reason to it. "Reopen" doesn't solve the problem; once Parallels has its shorts in a knot, nothing is going to convince it to cooperate.

But it's had the effect of making Parallels completely useless, an utter waste of money. This is a brand new iMac with Leopard, outta-the-box CD installation of Parallels using a Boot Camp partition, and the recommended upgrade to 5160.

I'm already trying to run a Microsoft OS --- I don't need another Crash-o-Matic to deal with!

Parallels, you have one extremely unhappy customer....!
