Manual file copies of VM not recognized

MacOS 10.5.3 and Parallels 3.0.5600. On Page 249 of the Mac User Guide it states that I can manually make a copy of a VM (Finder copy). I've done this two times by simply doing a Command D of the complete VM folder when Parallels is not running. If I move my original VM from its normal folder and leave my new back up where the original VM was and launch Parallels, Parallels thinks that I do not have a VM (it doesn't seem to recognize my backup). I would like to have exact backups of my VMs (cloning seems to change the MAC address and other things). Is there a way I can make Finder copies usable in Parallels? As a last result, would making a clone and changing the MAC address in the configuration panel be a no-no? BTW, would having a new MAC address make Microsoft think I had installed XP on a different PC during updates?

Your suggestion works. I noticed that if my VM folder only has the backup in it, then starting Parallels will ask me if I want to create a new VM and I therefore can't access the Open menu while the wizard is frontmost. However your suggestion works if I have my current VM and the backup in the VM directory. Parallels shows me the current VM and I can access the Open menu.
