Network speed slower than OS X

Running Parallels 3 build 5608. OS X Leopard 10.5.5. Network file server is Leopard 10.5.5 on a G5 tower.

When accessing files over our network, Win XP virtual machine is nowhere near as fast as OS X host. There is often a noticeable lag when just clicking around in the XP desktop, like network folders taking too long to open. When moving files back and forth it's also quantifiably slower (I'll post some data tomorrow maybe). I'm using Parallels bridged or shared networking (I've tried both and they're the same speed).

I just upgraded my network to get a true server OS, new cables, new router, etc. so it's frustrating to have Parallels/XP get log-jammed. Handling files/folders which reside on the Host drive are plenty fast. It's purely a network speed issue.

Are there other options for connecting to the network via Parallels? If so, what specifically should I do to connect? Thanks. I know very little about XP which is why I just like using Parallel's built-in simple networking, but if there's a faster method, I'd rather do that.

Finally, is this slower speed just because of Parallels overhead? Thanks!
