I'm new to PD & today attempted to install Win XP as guest. The program didn't detect what system was being installed & therefore I never saw the screen in which I could enter my Win product key [as mentioned in the "Getting Started Guide"] or user name. The boot order has my CD/DVD ROM 1 first & my Win XP disc is in my drive [a legal copy that I own].

The error message I got was: "No boot device is available."

I've read the 'getting started' & have been searching the Forums all day to no avail. I'll put up a screenshot [if I can figure out how]. PLEASE HELP!

    I'm running a MacBook Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, Intel Core 2 Duo, Processor Speed 2.53 GHz, with 4 GB memory [1067 MHz DDR3 - I think] & a 230 GB HD. Parallels 4.0 Build 4.0.3848.

    Thanks in advance!

    Same problem. (No boot device)
I bought only a download version of windows. Parallels seems to only be able to install it via CD or DVD. I burned all of the files to DVD, and tried to get parallels to install it, but I keep getting the same exact message as the screen shot near the top of this thread.
I've submitted a ticket and here id the ID.
    Please help!!!
    This is really frustrating.

    Hello, LoriM

Actually, Parallels Desktop 5 can boot and install guest operating system not only from CD/DVD disc, but from the installation CD/DVD ISO image as well.

In order to autodetect the type of the operating system while creating a new VM in a New VM assistant, open the Operating system source drop down menu and select an appropriate ISO image file.

Please, make sure the image is not already mounted in Mac OS X before proceeding with a New VM Assistant. This is because of a known issue in PD5 when os autodetection fails if ISO file is alredy mounted (we're fixing it now).

Could you please provide more details regarding the downloadable version of the Windows you have bought? Is it an ISO image file?

Before starting the virtual machine, please check the file attached to the virtual CD/DVD device in your VM configuration. Open VM Configuration editor, then go to the Hardware-->CD/DVD and check the file name of the file in the dialog on the right. It must be an instllation CD/DVD ISO image file. Choose a correct file if necessary.

    See attched: Problem report....

I tried to copy/paste the report here but it was way too big, even after trying to segment it. [This is the first time I ever tried to attach a file on a forum. The file is attached.]

I was trying to install Win 95 as guest O/S when this error occurred.

I saw your Problem Report. Parallels Desktop 5 works correct.

That's right, because your first boot device is empty hard disk.

    Do the following steps:

    1. Open virtual machine (in stopped state) configuration editor (menu Virtual Machine -> Configure...).
    2. Click on Hardware tab.
    3. In Hardware panel window choose Boot Order.
    4. Make CD/DVD first in Boot Order: list.
    5. Press OK.

    Try again install Win 95.

Are you sure that Win 95 installation disk is bootable?

Please, visit Microsoft site for instruction how to install Windows 95.

As I know it is not automatically as Windows 98.
May be for Win 95 need to format the hard disk.

    Didn't work....

Yes, this Win 95 disk is definitely bootable. On my iMac G4 [PPC] I used Guest PC to load Win 95 using this disk & had no problem.

    Anything progress

    Hi,

I'm having the same problem. I have a Windows 7 image that I've used for installation on other machines and vmware.

I've tried the "boot order" thing with no luck.

    Cheers
    Ole
