No Ethernet Joy but Wireless is OK

At home My MBP uses a wireless internet connection and XP has access with no issues. However, at my shop I have a DSL modem which connects to the MBP via an ethernet cable. There, the Mac gets on just fine but XP can't see the ethernet for some reason. The most common error message is that the cable is unplugged. Sometimes I get an IP address conflict message (IP address is already in use) but everything is set for DHCP. Ideas?

I just set this up today on my MBP and it works just fine. I'm using Win XP Pro under Parallels, no Boot Camp.

1. Open Configuration Editor
2. Click on Add
3. Select Network Adaptor
4. Click on Next
5. Select Bridged Ethernet
6. Click on Next
7. Select Ethernet Adapter; check 'Connect cable at startup'
8. Click on Next
9. Accept Default MAC address, click Finish

Upon booting Windows, you may get a warning about a problem with the network adapter. If you do, click on OK to make it go away.

Also, an icon appears in my system tray warning of little or no connectivity. I am able to surf the net and get email with no problem at all

Thanx Lew. I tried that but still no joy. I keep getting the following error:

IP Address Error:
71.142.55.135 in use by 00:4a:76:94:88:88, DHCP Server 192.168.0.1

The biggest PITA is that the popup will not go away. If I cancel it it just pops right up again along with a windows system IP address conflict error so I get stuck in an endless loop and can't use the computer at all and I have to force quit Parallels. I've tried rebooting the computer but ni luck so far.

Shared Networking didn't work for me, but its worth a try. Also, turn AirPort off before launching Parallels to see if that has any effect.
 
Thanx again for the ideas. Tried shared networking and also tried turning off the Airport. Still getting the errors! It's not so much that I can't hit the web via windows because I could still use the Mac side fir that. But I can't get the errors to stop which means that I can't work in windows at all.

OK, I think I know what's going on here. At home I have a cable modem connected through a router that acts as a DHCP server for the local network computers. My APBS is connected to a local port and serves as a wireless access point. At my shop I just have a DSL modem, no router or wireless. I think that the Mac is getting an IP address from the modem but the VM is seen as a seperate computer and the modem cannot come up with a second IP address. Nor is anything in the loop "smart" enough to apply the assigned address to the VM when it's running. So, tomorrow, when I'm back at the shop, I will try putting a router w/DHCP between the computer and the modem and we'll see what happens.

hey dd5 - that would be right. in bridged mode your windows OS will act as if it is a totally separate machine. So, unless your ISP allows you to grab more than one IP, you won't be able to connect in bridged mode without a router.

you should be able to use shared mode without a router if everything is running properly. i've also heard people on the forum using host-only mode and then using the osx internet connection sharing. i haven't tried that personally, though.

Well I tried shared mode and that did not work either. Also i turned on all of the sharing options in OSX but I will not know if that has any effect until tomorrow when I'm back at my shop. If that works, I'll save the cost of a router! If not I'll get an AE and go wireless through that. In either case I'll post back tomorrow and let you know what works (or not).

Lets try to solve your Shared Networking problem. What exactly do you mean that it didn't work?

Were you able to select Shared Networking option in VM configuration? If it was greyed out try this: Open Terminal in OSX and type
sudo /Applications/Parallels/Parallels\ Desktop.app/Contents/Resources/PvsvnicConfigure
then
sudo killall -HUP pvsnatd
Quit Parallels and start it again to see if Shared Networking is available now.

If you were able to set VM to Shared mode and the VM didn't get an IP address still try
sudo killall -HUP pvsnatd
from the Terminal. Restart your VM and see if it helped.

What I mean by "it didn't work" is that I was getting the IP address errors regardless of which mode I chose (shared, bridged or host only). However, turning on the internet sharing options in the OSX System Prefs. seems to have taken care of the problem. I was going to run the terminal commands but the problem there was that the IP errors seemed to take over the whole system and would just pop up again as fast as I was able to cancel out of them. The only option I had at that point was to force quit Parallels. Anyway, everything is working now. In fact, I'm writin this reply on Firefox in Windows. Thanx to all for the assist...
