I'm currently running Parallels on an Intel Mac with Leopard. I have installed Windows XP through a typical install. The program runs fine, but I have no sound. I have installed the Parallel Tools over and over, but no joy. I've reinstalled the program, but the same problem persists. I'm not running the program through Bootcamp. The Sigma Tel Audio driver is installed and activated. In fact, it is the AC'97 that I think is causing the problem as XP has it's own sound drivers and they seem to work (I got the Windows orchestra when I first started up). However, I simply cannot delete the damned Sigma Tel Audio Driver! When I uninstall it and restart Parallels, it is right back there. I've tried setting up windows so as not to accept drivers, but nothing can stop it sneaking back in. If you totally switch of sounds on the VM config. then there are no sounds at all. Is there a way to delete the AC'97 driver? Am I on the right track do you think?

Hello,
please, make sure that sound is installed and enabled in the Configuration Editor. Then, right-click My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager->Sound, video and game controllers, find that Sigma Tel Audio Driver, right-click it and choose "Uninstall". Then reboot the VM and reinstall Tools one more time.
Will the issue still occur after that?

Sound is installed and enabled. Set to start when VM boots up. Tried on both in-built and default devices. Had some success. Managed to install Parallel Tools (tried before, but didn't actually see them installed on computer). Had some sound. Orchestra played when I restarted. However, sound disappeared shortly after. Cannot delete Sigma Audio Drive. When I reinstall, it says I must restart. When I do, the drive is always reinstalled (says at the bottom in speech bubble). If I choose not to restart, the drive remains. When I deactivate the drive, control panel sound devices are all grayed out. No other options for sound. Sigma Drive appears to be only choice. Without it, it appears as if no sound could be played. Perhaps why system won't let me delete. I feel I'm getting closer as had some sound. Frustrating as it doesn't make sense to me, but that's windows I guess.

Good luck! I didn't get an answer to this problem despite searching the web from top to bottom. Didn't hear anything back from Parallels before my trial period expired, so ended up not purchasing the product. It's a shame really, because it looks like a good program, and I'm sure that it is something really simple that is causing the loss of sound.
Found The Solution
I was able to shut down the VM and search through the Parallels menu for additional "equipment" to install. Sound was one of them. Once I installed it, sound is active. Now, I've read several posts saying that sound went away after some time, so...time will tell.
For others, try shutting down the VM and searching the PD menus for any hint of installing other virtual "things" such as USB, Network, etc. One of them should be an option for Sound.

I was having I think the same problem as you. I contacted technical support. They told me the following, which worked.
1) Shut down your virtual machine.
2) Follow the directions below.
After doing this, when I next started Windows, it told me it detected a new audio device, the Intel audio driver or something. Anyhow, it works.
