At the moment there are two options when you select quit (other than asking what to do).

Suspend makes sense and does what is says

Poweroff doesn't - I thought that shutting down windows machines by pulling the power cord was bad for windows. certainly things like microsoft updates are installed at shutdown. Perhaps with parallels this isn't the case but all it seems to do is just stop windows in its tracks.

Why isn't there a "Shutdown Windows and Quit" optioin which would Shutdown windows cleanly and then quit Parallels. This seems like it would be the best option.

    Thanks for considering it

Shutdown in Parallels does exactly what shutdown would do on a hardware PC -- it removes "power". Implementing a shutdown and quit outside of the guest would require knowing the details of starting a programmed shutdown in every possible guest.

To shut down a guest, use the facility provided by the guest (Start -> Shutdown in Windows). Asking for a Windows shutdown to then "power off" the VM might be more reasonable.
