OS install. Windows disc not recognized

I am new to mac. I have a new MacBook Pro with Leopard. I have installed Parallels 3.0. I start Parallels desktop and it takes me through the install OS process. However, when it come time for me to insert the Windows disc it continues to tell me that either the DVD/CD drive is not ready or there is no disc inserted, even though I have the disc inserted. I am using a new retail Windows Vista Home Premium disc. When I insert the disc when Parallels isn't running it also doesn't seem to be recognized by the Mac. No icon appears on the desktop for the drive. After a minute or so the disc is automatically ejected. I have restarted my Mac a couple of times. I thought that maybe my drive was malfunctioning so I tried a different DVD which was promptly recognized and opened by my Mac.
Any suggestions? Thanks,

Thanks for the tip. It didn't work. In "disc utility" it shows the CD/DVD drive but doesn't seem to show anything in it. When I go through the image creation process, it says it can't create it.
It behaves as though it isn't even recognizing that there is a disc in the drive. After about a minute, or less, it automatically ejects the disc. Could it be the disc.... the drive....am I missing something?

is it possible to try the disk on another Mac or on the PC? May be there is a problem with a disk.

It appears to have been a problem with the disc. I got the Mac to see the disc briefly but it would still not work, and eventually kick out the disc. It wouldn't work in my PC either. I went and got a new disc. Actually, I decided to switch to XP. It installed without problems. Thanks for the help.
