Parallels Application Not Responding

A funny thing happened to me this morning when I went to boot up my Parallels machine. The linked circles bounced for a while, then stopped. A quick check showed the application open, but it did not resolve to the VM screen to launch my machine. Further, my MacBookPro began to crawl in every application (even after I forced a quit of Parallels).

I am using it on a MacBookPro 15 with 2GB of memory (512 allocated to Parallels). My build is 1970

Any ideas?

If possible, open the system monitor and explore memory, cpu, and disk usage, make a note of what you see, or capture a screen shot, then reboot the machine. Check the system monitor again, then start Parallels. Keep an eye on resources and see if there is any evidence of creeping resource commitment.
