Parallels Desktop 4.0 Cannot Find Network Adapter

I just bought Parallels Desktop and updated to the latest version upon starting for the first time. Now when I start XP in Parallels Desktop I immediately get the following error message:

Unable to use the network adapter 1.

Make sure that the network adapter 0 is available and enabled on your Mac.

I am running in coherence right now and OSX is connected to my wireless network (everything works good in Safari) but Parallels desktop does not have me connected to my wireless network, just as the error message warned me. I checked the forums and see others are having the same problem but there are no solutions posted (I am running the latest build.) I have a new MacBook Pro 15.4" model. I am running Parallels Desktop Build 4.0.3844. I have rebooted my MacBook Pro and restarted Parallels Desktop several times but I still cannot get the network adapter error to clear. I need advice on how to fix this problem. I never had this problem in 3.0.

please send a problem report using menu Help -> Report a Problem and post its number here. This problem report contains various logs required to understand the problem.
 
I got frustrated and erased the hard disk and reloaded OSX followed by the most recent Parallels Desktop update (4.0.3844) and now everything works. The problem, it seems, is that "uninstall" does not remove all the drivers and library files from the original version that comes on the CD. So when you go to install the update after using the original disk you can't recover, or at least I couldn't figure out how to "grip grep bash" my way out of it. How I got into this mess in the first place is that the installer wouldn't complete the update download at the beginning of the installation process when using the disk, so I just went with the old version. Big mistake.

So if you want to avoid this problem you need to start with the updated version and not let a retail store CD touch your mac. Otherwise download the most recent update from the website and use the installation key on the CD envelope. Just don't use the disk unless it has the newest 4.0 build.

My Solution

I'm not sure of the reasons behind your issue. For me, I had problems with my AirPort after upgrading to Mountain Lion. I ended up deleting the SystemConfiguration directory and allowing OSX to recreate it. That's when my problem with Parallels began I was getting the Cannot Find Network Adapter message.

To fix Parallels, I went into each of my VM parallel configuration (Virtual Machine --> Configuration --> Hardware) and I deleted the network adapter and then recreated it. That fixed the problem.

Hope that helps anyone else having an issue.
