Parallels + External firewire audio = sad times

I've got an MOTU 896 which I regularly use for audio production. I've noticed that when I have it powered up and connected while running parallels, parallels slows down over time to the point where my whole machine slows to a crawl. Quitting Parallels fixes the issue temporarily. Once it begins, however, whether or not the MOTU is connected running parallels returns the machine to crawl status until I reboot the laptop.

The VM is Windows 2003. Sound and USB are not included in the VM. The MOTU is directly connected to the Macbook Pro.

I'm using the most recent MOTU drivers. This appears to be an issue in all of the RCs of the current betas. I'm not certain of the status against the current release.

Is anyone using an MOTU firewire interface successfully w/ the current parallels?

Parallels does not have Firewire support and it is likely that support will never be included. Have you contacted your MOTU vendor to ask them why their system won't work in Parallels virtual machines? Then I'd recommend you download and install VMWware's Fusion product and try your MOTU in that environment. It if works then you'll know that it's possible and you can be sure if it's possible, Parallels will find a way.
 
Thanks for the reply, first off.

I'm not trying to use the MOTU inside the environment, I'm saying that having it connected while using parallels eventually slows my machine (17" Macbook Pro w/ 2GB RAM, 512MB allocated to the VM) to a completely unusable state.

The activity monitor shows plenty of free RAM available even when this happens, although it behaves as though it's a swap problem.
