Parallels Image Tool rollback problem

I could not find any answers in the forum for this exact problem.

I was running the option to "Merge Snapshots" when part way through, an error was encountered:

An error occurred while performing the operation. The
changes made to your virtual machine will be rolled back.

Rolling back the changes...

Warning: The operation may require a significant amount of
time to complete. Please wait until it is completed.

What is a reasonable amount of time to roll back? It had not run that long, maybe an hour or so, before the roll back started. When I tried to click the Cancel button, it just pops up and says the Image Tool is rolling back the changes and please wait.

What would happen if I "Force Quit" the Image Tool? Would it corrupt the VM?
 
I am also experiencing the same problem. I am running XP SP3 through Parallels 4 on an iMac (10.5.8). XP was getting a bit sluggish. From past experience, compacting the image will sometimes improve performance of the VM. I create a lot of small files while performing simulation using Matlab, and may be disk fragmentation is an issue.

In any case, I tried compacting the image three days ago, and went for lunch. By evening, I notice a message saying "An error occurred while performing the operation. The changes made to your virtual machine will be rolled back. To stop the operation press Cancel. Remaining time: less than a minute". And now, two days later, it is still showing the same message. Pressing Cancel of cause brings up the "This operation cannot be canceled" message.

I don't want to risk corrupting the image by force quitting the program, but if the process has not completed in 48 hours, it probably will never finish.

What should I do?

Please follow the steps below in regards to the issue:


1) Please unzip the attachment to some place and start virtual machine.

2) Right-click to the CD-ROM Icon on parallels VM window and choose "connect image". Select the unzipped prl_fs_drv.iso file. As well the image may be connected through VM configuration

3) After Windows is booted, log on to it as Adminitstrator or some other user with Admin-rights, open the CD-Rom content (usually drive D:\ ; My Computer -> D:) and select install.bat. After that you should see several messages and invitation to reboot.

4) Please reboot the VM and try to install Parallels Tools. This time it should work.

5) install.bat should log all actions to the c:\temp\setup.log. If something will go wrong with the solution, please send me this file.

Thanks for the prompt reply. The Parallels Image Tool is still stuck in roll back mode, and the associated VM cannot be started.

Hello Kam,

I would request you to perform below steps:

1. Click on the below link to download the DMG file of latest update of Parallels:

http://download.parallels.com/deskt...lsDesktop-parallels-en_US-4.0.3844.408728.dmg

2. After downloading the DMG file, open it and choose uninstall and make sure to select "Application Settings" while uninstalling.

3. Then open the same DMG file and choose install.

4. Launch Parallels Desktop and start Windows.

5. Uninstall Parallels Tools from add or remove programs(start menu/control panel), after uninstalling, restart Windows.

6. Install Parallels Tools from virtual machine tab on top menu bar.
 
The Parallel Image Tool was still stuck. Hoping that I could retrieve a backup drive image from Time Machine if something went wrong, I force quited the program, and prepared for the worst. Luckily, the image was still intact, and I could still boot from it.

I then followed your instruction to uninstall Parallels Desktop, reinstall it, remove Parallels Tools, and reinstall it. BTW, what does "Removing Application Settings" do during uninstall of Parallels Desktop?

Now should I try compacting the image again? Actually, my question really is this. Does compacting an image improve the VM's performance? Alternatively, does defragmentation using e.g. Disk Keeper improve performance? Again, I create and delete a lot of files during my simulation work.
 
Hello,

The reason for the issue is that we are selecting a wrong hard disk.

Please follow the below steps.

1. Launch Parallels Image Tools.
2. Select Increase the virtual machine hard disk.
3. Select Chose and browse to the location of the .pvm file.
4. Select the .hdd file which is inside .pvm and do not select the .hdd file which inside the .hdd.
5. Select open and continue.
