I made an attempt at running Parallels Desktop 12 on my Mac running Yosemite July of 2016. Of course it wouldn't install, they were not compatible. I've finally upgraded to 10.12.6 and now there is an item in the App Store called "Parallels Lite". I'm not completely certain what it is, but it sounds like an emulator like "Wine", with the ability to make an in-app purchase for the ability to run Windows for a 1 year subscription of $59.99. It is not clear what the "Lite" version really does. I don't want to run Windows, only Linux of my choice, possibly break it, and reinstall, etc. What I want is to keep the OS's separate, to limit malware / adware / whatever - so that if I make a mistake in the VM, I have limited exposure of the base OS X to whateveritmaybe. I remember getting daily offers for 30% off towards the end of the trial period (which I was never able to use) - am I likely to get such an offer again for Parallels 13? (maybe it was end of life cycle at that time for 12?). I did wipe the Mac and reinstall recently, so should I simply try with the same email address I used before or use another one for the download? I'm not trying to be cheap. I've used VirtualBox in the past - good results on Linux Hosts, not so much on a new Retina MacBook (display frustrations which all VM vendors probably had to deal with). I simply want a good solution to last for the next 7 months to 1.5 years this Mac needs to last - and hopefully carry the license over to my next hardware purchase. Thanks.
