Parallels won't launch after OS upgrade

Hi, everyone.

I'm using a four year old MBP. I wanted to upgrade to Lion and realized I hadn't yet upgraded to Snow Leopard. So, after checking to make sure I had the latest build of Parallels 6, I first upgraded to Snow Leopard and then to Lion. I didn't check on Parallels in between the two upgrades.

Today, when I attempt to launch Parallels, it flashes the icon as if it's going to open, it bounces once on the Dock and then nothing.

Console is giving me messages like this:

Can anyone help, please??

Download the latest version of PDM 6 from the main site via Parallels.com > Downloads > Parallels Desktop for Mac (7) > Version 6 is at the bottom right.
Install it over the one you have.

And no, you won't lose your settings or VM.

I forgot to mention that I tried that previously and it didn't work. I also tried downloading Parallels 7 and it won't launch either.

Is there something else I can try?

Unfortunately, that didn't work either.

The good news is that a tech savvy friend of mine figured it out. Apparently, there was something that was preventing the installer from actually installing Parallels. Once he deleted that, Parallels 7 installed and I'm back up and running.

What was preventing? Please share it here so it can help others.
 
My friend said that the permissions on the /Library/Parallels folder were incorrect. They system did not have the read/write privileges it needed in order to launch the required services.

I checked the box that said "Helpful answer". Is that all I have to do? (Sorry it that's a dumb question. I'm new to this forum!)
 
If you have a time machine backup. Simply "Restore" the Parallels Desktop application from an earlier time when it was working properly.
 
Not a solution at all, because:

1. Restoring from time machine you would have to know exactly what files needed to be restored, Parallels Desktop install more files than just the .app in the Applications folder.

2. The problem in this case only popped up when doing an upgrade, and the problem had to do with wrong permissions, there was no way to know when the permissions were wrongly set.
 
Please re-read this thread, this is a different situation, still, it's more advisable to re-install than restoring the .app.
 
All...updating this for anyone else looking. I am running Sierra 10.12.6 with a Windows 10 Parallels VM. I put my SSD in a new Macbook Pro with similar specs and my Parallels gave out (I think I was running v10). I upgraded to v13, as that was suggested by a few others here, and did work.
Error messages I saw:
"no suitable image found"
"unknown file"

So, I have to upgrade Parallels, but my problem seems solved.
